How To Create A Map To Your Dream Life

Practical Steps To Build A Map To The Future You Really Want

You can think about a better life until the cows come home! But if you want it and I mean really want it, then you need to take action. Taking action and making changes is the only way to get what you want. Of course, you need to take the right action. Focusing on the right things and cutting out the rest is key to making real steps forward.

Personal development and self-improvement concentrates on self-reflection, learning about who you are and what speaks to you, and then taking steps to go after those things. It’s about constant improvement, and not just talking about, actually doing things.

Today’s post is all about creating a map to your dream life. There are many different steps you can take to start creating the life you have always dreamt of, and you need a strategic plan. Putting together a plan and working systematically through the steps will help you change your life! You need to remember, it only takes two minutes to change your life.

Constant changes occur within our life that we have no idea are happening. Every decision we make has all kinds of impacts on our life. We can’t even begin to comprehend the changes caused by simple decisions; this is going on at all times. Choosing to go after the things you really want sets a journey in motion that you can follow to the lengths you want to achieve. It’s all about living with intention, setting those intentions as having a kick-ass life, and then taking daily actions to make those intentions become reality.

Let’s take a look at some things you can do to start creating a map to the life of your dreams.

1. Produce A Spreadsheet Called ‘My Ultimate Life Wish List’

I love a good spreadsheet. It’s a running joke at the office where I work as an Account Manager as we have a spreadsheet for literally everything. This is a running theme because it’s exactly the same in my personal life too!

Having a spreadsheet makes it very visual and you can see at a glance what you’re aiming for.

The Ultimate Life Wish List is basically a huge list of all the things you want in your life, broken down into categories. By writing out everything that you want in your life, be it physical, mental, or emotional, you are starting to visualise and manifest those things.

Asking for what you want is the first step in getting what you want. Be clear on your goals and what matters to you deep down.

2. Write Out Your Positive Affirmations

When it comes to creating a map to your dream life, the next step is writing up some positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations are basically phrases that address what you want in life like you already have it/embody it. They help enforce those feelings and make your mind accept them like they’re already a part of your life.

I like to have my positive affirmations around me in a few different ways. Here are a few ideas to help you display your positive affirmations.

  • Keep a list of them in your phone notes
  • Write them up and display them on your mirrors – dressing table, bathroom, hallway
  • Have a list of them in your car, either stuck to the inside of your visor or to the dashboard
  • Create a graphic and have them as your screensaver on your laptop
  • Put them in your notebook/journal
  • Stick a list of them next to your bed

The basic principle is making sure you see them often and that your brain takes them in.

Choosing positive affirmations or creating them for yourself is very personal, and needs to come from you. You need to take on the ones that mean something to you and are going to help you become who you want to become, feel the way you want to feel, and have the life you can’t wait to lead.

They are extremely undervalued, but once you start implementing them in your life it’s unlikely you’ll ever stop!

For me, I see it as brain training. I’m putting those positive thoughts into my brain and reinforcing them so that I believe them instead of any negative thoughts I’ve managed to hold onto.

Positive affirmations should be statement starting with ‘I am…’ or ‘I have…’ and should state things you want to be or have as if you already have them. This helps your brain adopt them as true statements, things that already exist within your life. If you have a list of things you want, then they’re likely to stay as things you’re continually chasing. But if you list them as things you have or already are, then you’re manifesting them into your current life.

Create a list of things you want to have and be, and then follow the above steps of leaving them everywhere for your brain to soak up. You’ll be amazed how quickly those things start showing up in your life.

3. Make A Decision & Then Make The Necessary Changes

You can’t change your life without changing some elements of your life.

It sounds obvious and simple, but people often think that they can have things exactly the way they are but just with lots of money in the bank, a new relationship, or a whole new career path. To make those changes become a reality, other things in your life will have to change.

If you want to create your dream life, then you need to make some decisions, and then make the necessary changes systematically, to get you to where you want to be.

For example, in summer of 2019, I decided I wanted to give up smoking. This was the decision. I had been smoking for 12 years, and I was terrified of going through giving up. I thought it was going to be horrendous and I would never make it.

However, I knew I had made a decision, so I would naturally need to make some changes to my life in order to facilitate that decision.

First off, I read Allen Carr’s Easy Way To Give Up Smoking, which was amazing and had me given up the second I had finished reading it. I was so ready to give up, and this book just made it easy because I listened properly to what I was being told and felt it was true.

I looked at other things I could do to help facilitate this decision, and the changes I needed to make.

  • Throwing out my cigarettes immediately was the biggest change to make!
  • I cleaned my car inside and out and made sure it smelt fresh and clean.
  • Changing my work routine by not going to the smoking area, and going for a walk or to get a coffee instead

Once you make a decision in your life, naturally there will be changes that go alongside it. Don’t fight them. Embrace them instead and figure out the best changes you can make. They will be the things that lead you to the decision you made becoming a reality.

Start by choosing the thing you want, consciously and with conviction. If you want a new career, decide it and then start taking action and making the necessary changes to get you there.

Taking the new career as an example, what would you need to do to change into your desired career path?

  • Would you need training or a new qualification?
  • Could you move into that area within your current company?
  • Is there development opportunities within your current role?
  • Do you know anyone within that industry you could get in touch with for advice?

Think about it properly and write down all the things that come to mind. What changes would you need to make? How can you go about making those changes? What do you already have that relates to this goal?

By systematically breaking it down, you have some clear actions you can take that will help you head towards the place you want to be.

Now, it’s simply about making those leaps and taking the action required to get you on the path.

4. Learn As Much As You Possibly Can

When it comes to creating a dream life, knowledge is power. Working on yourself and your self-development is crucial in making a dream life become a reality.

The more you know and understand, the easier you will find it to make the right decisions, focus on the right things, and help yourself achieve that dream life status.

Personal growth is a continuous journey, it isn’t an end goal situation. This takes all the pressure off, because you are completely at liberty to go at your own pace, and do it your own way.

For me, I realised that there is so much to learn about all kinds of things in life, and I had an interest in many more things than I ever knew.

I want to learn about writing, blogging, finance, investing, mindfulness, meditation, manifestation, mindset and positive attitude, real estate, interior design, the list is so endless.

Working each day to learn something new and help develop my mind is really important to me. Over 2020 and the start of a new decade, I have many more things I want to learn about and start bringing into my life.

I honestly believe that knowledge and information is the key to becoming successful and growing a life you’re truly proud of. You have to build it around true experience and reality. You can take it to the next level, but only by having the understanding and the information to do so.

Learning about things that you want to achieve, things that interest you and fill you with excitement, and things that will help you become a more educated, competent and intelligent person will always be a good thing. There’s no such thing as learning too much!

  • YouTube videos
  • Blog posts/articles
  • Online courses
  • Books

Taking in new information will help expand your mind, and will help you build your dream life. You’ll possess the tools you need and the grit to get you there.
