The Number One Blogging Tip For Your Creative Business

When you decide to start blogging, it’s the beginning of a massive journey. There are so many things to learn, and so much experience to gain. There are also a hell of a lot of skills that you might never think you would need to run a successful blog.

I’ve been blogging for over two years now, and I have learnt a crazy amount since I first started, and it’s a constant thing. I have so many new ideas all the time, and so many goals I want to reach with it.

There’s No Magic Formula

There’s no magic formula to blogging.

I know we don’t want to hear that when we read these kinds of blog posts. We think one day we’re going to stumble across this one little piece of information that tells us the answer.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that ain’t ever gonna happen.

The sooner we come to terms with that, the better! Instead, put your energy into learning, growing and showing up every single day for your blog, and for your online business.

It’s all about consistency, and learning to follow the biggest rule of blogging whenever you are creating content:

“TO BE A SUCCESSFUL BLOGGER, YOU NEED TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS”

It doesn’t matter what your topic is, what you are writing about, how small your audience is or how long you have been a blogger for.

I genuinely believe this is the most important advice you will hear in regards to blogging. It certainly was for me. Once I realised that no-one cares what I had for dinner or what I did with my day, things clicked.

Alright, we might care what celebs have for dinner but that’s different. People are only going to come to you if you are giving them something. You need to provide value.

If your blog is providing solutions to people’s problems, then you are going down the right path. Making money from your blog is only possible if you are providing something useful to your readers.



 

How To Provide Value To Your Readers

Once you know that you need to provide value, I can hear you asking “HOW?!”.

There are so many ways in which you can do this for your readers. You will need to do some research to make sure that you are providing the right kind of value for the people that are actually reading your content.

You can’t provide value to people who you don’t understand. You need clarity on who your audience really is, before you can give them value.

The first stop – GET ANALYTICS.

Using Analytics For Your Blog & Online Biz

I would advise getting set up with Google Analytics immediately once you have your blog live, so that you can see what is going on.

GA shows you who your readers are, where they are finding you, what they are looking at, and what they are doing on your website.

This information is key for you to be able to grow your business, as you will be focusing on your TARGET AUDIENCE.

Take some time to familiarise yourself with Google Analytics – let me know if you would be interested in a dedicated post about GA and I will more than happily get it together 🙂

Look at the demographics and figure out who is reading your posts. How old are they? Where do they live? What are their interests?

Check out where your readers are finding your blog. Spend time developing your approach on those platforms. People finding you through Instagram? Boost your Instagram focus. Twitter working for you? Spend more time tweeting!

Ways To Provide Value To Your Readers

There are lots of different ways to give your audience something they want or need:

  1. Through writing blog posts that give the reader something useful, helps them do something or gives them advice about a topic. We tend to read blog posts when we are looking for an answer about something, and so it makes complete sense that when we are writing blog posts, we provide answers to our readers. Whilst fun posts about your life are entertaining for some people, I do think these are best kept to a minimum if you’re looking to grow your blog as a business.
  2. By adding content upgrades into your posts. When you write a blog post, remember to create a content upgrade that your readers can access by signing up for your email list. This is a whole other subject; email marketing is huge for your blogging business. I would advise starting off with choosing an email service provider and setting up a simple list. I use MailerLite, who are free for your first 1000 subscribers, and offer amazing features such as list segregation, the functionality to create forms, landing pages and pop-ups, and also amazing automated emails for when people sign up. Offer a potential subscriber something free if they sign up for your list, and you are much more likely to get people to hand over their email address.
  3. Through giving away tips and advice via your social media accounts. A huge part of blogging is becoming a resource, an expert and a professional in your chosen topic. By providing additional support on your social media platforms, you are showing that you are a resource that people should follow because there is something in it for them. You have to be as unselfish as possible, and give people as much as you possibly can for free. A favourite phrase of mine is “You have to help a million to make a million”. I’m not sure who said it, but I love that idea that to make a lot of money, you have to help a lot of people. It should be about the help you are providing, and that reason is why I do what I do. I like to help people, I like to give people answers to their problems. It’s how I ended up in Account Management in my real life job!
  4. Via emails sent to your email list on a weekly or monthly basis. When you have your email list of subscribers, an amazing way to provide value to them is to send them emails with extra content that they won’t get just reading your blog. You can provide insider tips, behind-the-scenes info, how-to guides – whatever works for your content and the kind of niche you are in. Whatever you do, just make sure that you are staying in line with your own focus. Keep providing the content you want, for the people you want to help.

When you are providing value to your readers, you will reap the benefits. You will build up that trust and faith, and people will rely on you. They will trust your judgement, and listen to what you have to say.

Blogging is all about giving information to people. If you do it in the right way, you will become one of their favourite ways to get that info.

At the end of the day, we listen to the people we like, but we take on board the things we hear from people we TRUST.
